This is Not a Food Magazine

A collection of essays and articles about culture and identity in Singapore through the lens of food. This compilation contains contents ranging from Zi Char menus, Home Economics curriculums, unassuming kitchen/cooking tools critical for making signature dishes, to contemplations on specific local food or recipes. As designers, we also see interesting relationships between its contents and design; there are insights that might remain unnoticed if not for the author’s versatile and broad range of interests and inquiry.

This collection made me reflect on how food is deeply intertwined with culture and identity in Singapore. Beyond just meals, it tells stories — through zi char menus, home-cooked traditions and even the overlooked tools that shape our favorite dishes. What stood out was how design plays a role in all of this, from the way food is presented to the way it’s experienced. The authors’ curiosity and keen observations uncover layers of meaning that might otherwise go unnoticed, making me appreciate the everyday aspects of food in a new light.
