Street Report #6: Phaa Bai

By: Barry Macdonald

The sixth Street Report — an extensive photographic survey — the metaphor of “city as tapestry” found its physical and tactile form in the iconic blue-and-white tarps (Phaa Bai) across Thailand. Being the most affordable and lightweight of the tarp class, its distinct striped pattern recurs in almost every layer of street life. From picnics, to construction sites, to sacred spaces. For quick fixes and elaborate draping. It has even been observed being mimicked in high-street retail branding.

We've all probably seen this classic blue tarp somewhere in SG — at void decks, neighbourhood shops, or some construction area we passed by subconsciously. In Thailand, it's a whole new level. This photo collection captures various ordinary and creative ways the Thai use this blue tarp.
